Hazel Janet (Curtis) Lay July 27, 1957 – May 27, 2026
Hazel Janet Lay, lovingly known as Jan to her family and friends and “Grandma Hazel” to her grandchildren, passed away peacefully at the age of 68 on May 27, 2026 after a brief illness.
Jan was born on July 27, 1957, in Reed City, Michigan, to Lloyd and Kathleen Curtis. Throughout her life, Jan called Cadillac, LeRoy, and Lake, Michigan home. She was the eighth of nine children, growing up surrounded by a large and loving family that remained central to her life.
She graduated from Pine River High School and later earned her Bachelor's degree from Baker College of Cadillac, building a career in payroll and accounting. Jan was known for her strong work ethic, attention to detail, and dedication throughout her career.
Above all else, Jan treasured time spent with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren, who brought her endless joy and pride. She found happiness in tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, kayaking, spending meaningful time with friends, and reflecting on the many cross-country motorcycle adventures she shared with her late husband, Denny.
Jan is survived by her former spouse, Kenneth Logan, father of her children. She was the loving mother of Matthew (Jennifer) Logan of Cadillac, Michigan; and Jessica (Mark) Savoie of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She is also survived by her stepchildren: Dennis (Daisy) Lay, Brandy Lay, Thomas Zienkiewicz, Chasity Lay, and Kenneth Zienkiewicz. She was the proud and loving grandmother of Kayla Logan, Bailey (Cole) Sanderson, Brayden Logan, Reese Savoie, Tristan Logan, and Abbigail Savoie. Jan is also survived by her siblings: Leonard Curtis, Carole Edstrom, Bonnie (Larry) Servello, Julie (Jim) Johnston, and Penny Curtis, along with several beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, Dennis “Denny” Lay; her parents, Lloyd and Kathleen Curtis; her siblings, Rose Host, Richard “Dick” Curtis, and Susie Campbell; and her stepson, Perry Lay.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 14, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Cadillac Commons Area, 117 W. Cass Street, Cadillac, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Munson Healthcare in Jan’s memory.
Jan will be remembered for her resilience, wild and adventurous spirit, and the deep love she shared with all who knew her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. The family is being served by Cremation Services Only.
